Birgunj, Parsa [Nepal], January 6 (ANI): Authorities in Birgunj city have extended the curfew following escalating religious tensions triggered by a controversial TikTok video. Protesters defied earlier orders, prompting officials to take strict action.
Curfew Details and Restrictions
The District Administration Office (DAO) of Parsa initially imposed the curfew from 6 PM on Monday, January 5, to 8 AM on Tuesday, January 6. Due to continued unrest, the curfew now lasts until 1 PM on Tuesday, January 6.
The curfew covers four key areas of Birgunj city:
- Bus Park, Nagwa, Inarwa (East)
- Sirsia River (West)
- Gandak Chowk (North)
- Shankaracharya Gate (South)
Residents are strictly prohibited from holding gatherings, rallies, or demonstrations. Authorities warned that security personnel may shoot on sight if the curfew is violated. People are advised to stay home unless absolutely necessary and contact 100 for emergencies.
Essential Services Exempted
During the curfew, vehicles for essential services are allowed, including:
- Ambulances and health workers
- Fire engines and hearses
- Media personnel
- Tourist transport
- Vehicles of human rights and diplomatic missions
- Air passengers with valid tickets
Cause of the Unrest
The tensions started in Dhanusha’s Kamala Municipality, Janakpur, after two youths, Haider Ansari and Amanat Ansari, posted a video on TikTok. Locals claimed the video hurt religious sentiments. The situation worsened when a mosque in ward 6 of Kamala Municipality was vandalized.
Protests quickly spread to Birgunj city in Parsa district, where demonstrators burned tires and chanted slogans. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
Authorities’ Appeal
The DAO has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel during the curfew. Officials are working to restore peace and prevent further unrest.
