Davos (Switzerland), January 19: The Alpine town of Davos has entered a high-security lockdown as the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 begins today.
Authorities tightened security across the town ahead of the opening. Visitors arriving by train now see Swiss Army air-defence cannons, signalling the start of Davos’ annual high-alert phase, according to Swiss outlet 20 Minuten.
Security measures are clearly visible near Davos Lake. A snow-cleared helicopter landing pad stands ready for emergency use. Several Oerlikon 35-millimetre twin anti-aircraft cannons remain stationed nearby. The Swiss Army has used these weapons since 1963 to protect high-profile gatherings.
Promenade Transforms for Global Summit
Along the Promenade, Davos’ main street, hotels, shops, and churches have changed their roles. Countries and corporations have rented entire buildings for the summit. The area now resembles a continuous exhibition space.
Saudi Arabia has drawn major attention this year. The country has branded the Migros building near the Congress Centre, turning it into a Saudi pavilion for WEF 2026.
Despite the preparations, Sunday remained calm. Roads near the Congress Centre stayed open. Security teams installed checkpoints but did not activate them. Locals, tourists, and security personnel moved freely in clear winter weather.
Fire Alarm Causes Brief Disruption
A brief moment of tension occurred in the afternoon. Fire engines rushed toward a hotel on the Promenade with sirens on. Officials later confirmed a false alarm caused by a fire detection system. Emergency services cleared the scene within minutes.
Further along the Promenade, the English Church has taken on a new role. This year, the United States is using it officially for the first time. The venue will host events marking America’s 250th anniversary under the theme “Freedom.” Discussions will focus on artificial intelligence, space exploration, and innovation. The US President’s attendance remains unconfirmed.
India and Ukraine Maintain Strong Presence
India has once again set up one of the largest national pavilions along the Promenade. However, WEF officials have clarified that many pavilions operate independently of the forum’s official program.
Ukraine is using its pavilion to brief global leaders on the ongoing war with Russia. Organisers have reiterated that several such pavilions are not formally linked to WEF.
As speculation continues about the possible stay of the US President at the heavily guarded “goldenes Ei” hotel, Davos maintains its annual balance. The town hosts global power brokers while functioning under tight security as a small mountain community.
