New Delhi, February 6 :
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called the newly signed tripartite agreement for Eastern Nagaland “historic.” He said the agreement will speed up development and create new opportunities for the people.
The Centre, the Government of Nagaland, and the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) signed the agreement on Thursday. ENPO represents eight recognised Naga tribes from six eastern districts.
PM Modi shared the update on X. He said the agreement will strengthen the development journey of Eastern Nagaland. He also said it will bring prosperity and reflect the government’s commitment to peace and inclusive growth in the Northeast.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio were present during the signing.
The agreement will lead to the creation of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA). It will cover six districts: Tuensang, Mon, Kiphire, Longleng, Noklak, and Shamator.
The agreement also allows the devolution of powers for 46 subjects to the FNTA.
The FNTA will get a mini-secretariat. The Additional Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary will lead it. The agreement also ensures fair sharing of the development budget for Eastern Nagaland. The allocation will depend on population and area.
The agreement clearly states that it will not affect Article 371(A) of the Constitution.
On the occasion, Amit Shah said the day marks an important step for a dispute-free Northeast. He said PM Modi wants a Northeast free from insurgency, violence, and disputes. He added that the government has signed 12 major agreements in the region since 2019.
