Washington DC, February 10 :
US President Donald Trump on Monday criticised Canada for treating the United States “unfairly” for decades. He shared his remarks in a post on Truth Social.
Trump claimed that Canada does not compensate the US enough. He also accused Ottawa of taking advantage of American trade policies.
Trump Raises Issue Over Ontario-Michigan Bridge
In his post, Trump pointed to a massive bridge project between Ontario and Michigan. He said Canada owns both sides of the bridge.
He also alleged that Canada built the bridge with almost no US content.
Trump claimed former US President Barack Obama gave Canada a waiver. He said the waiver helped Canada bypass the Buy American Act.
Trump Accuses Canada of Blocking US Alcohol Products
Trump also criticised Ontario for restricting US products. He claimed Ontario does not allow US spirits, beverages, and alcoholic products on store shelves.
He said the products are “absolutely prohibited” in the province.
Trump Warns Against Canada-China Deal
Trump also reacted to reports about Canada’s possible deal with China. He warned that such a move would hurt Canada in the long run.
He claimed China would “eat Canada alive” and leave the US with “leftovers.”
Trump Mentions Dairy Tariffs
The US President also raised concerns about Canadian tariffs on US dairy products. He said these tariffs have remained unacceptable for years.
Trump claimed the tariffs put American farmers at financial risk.
Trump Says He Will Block Bridge Opening
Trump said he would not allow the bridge to open unless the US receives full compensation.
He also demanded fairness and respect from Canada.
Trump added that negotiations would start immediately. He also suggested the US should own at least half of the bridge asset.
Trump Has Raised Canada Trade Issue Before
This is not the first time Trump has criticised Canada. Last month, he made similar remarks during his address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summit in Davos.
At the event, Trump said Canada gets “a lot of freebies” from Washington.
He also said Canada should show more gratitude to the United States.
Trump’s Comments Target Mark Carney
Trump’s latest remarks appeared aimed at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney recently spoke at the WEF about global power rivalry.
He also criticised tariff coercion in a veiled reference to Washington’s trade tactics.
