Kachchh, March 16: The LPG tanker Shivalik LPG tanker is expected to arrive at Mundra Port on Monday after successfully crossing the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian authorities recently allowed two Indian-flagged LPG vessels to pass through the crucial maritime route. The ships include Shivalik and Nanda Devi, both carrying large consignments of liquefied petroleum gas to India.
Tankers Carry Over 92,000 Metric Tonnes of LPG
According to officials from the Ministry of Shipping, the vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz late at night and started their journey toward India.
The tanker Shivalik is scheduled to arrive at Mundra Port on March 16. Meanwhile, the vessel Nanda Devi is expected to reach Kandla Port on March 17.
Together, the two vessels are transporting around 92,700 metric tonnes of LPG, which will support India’s domestic energy supply.
Officials also confirmed that 24 Indian-flagged vessels were operating in the Persian Gulf region earlier. After the safe transit of these two tankers, 22 vessels with about 611 Indian seafarers remain in the region.
India Engages Iran to Ensure Safe Maritime Passage
Earlier, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said India is maintaining direct communication with Iran to ensure the safe movement of Indian vessels.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Jaishankar explained that dialogue with Tehran has helped facilitate the transit of Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that India prefers coordination and diplomatic engagement rather than confrontation when addressing maritime security issues.
Strait of Hormuz Critical for Global Oil Trade
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Nearly 20 percent of global oil trade passes through this narrow waterway.
Any disruption in this region can affect global energy markets and shipping operations.
Because of this, India continues diplomatic engagement with regional partners to protect its energy supply chain.
Iran Reaffirms Passage for Indian Ships
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader’s representative in India, Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, confirmed that Indian vessels will be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
He said Iranian authorities are working with diplomatic channels to facilitate the safe transit of Indian ships in the region.
