Tehran, March 21: Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles targeting the strategic Diego Garcia base, according to reports citing US officials.
The base, located in the Diego Garcia, is jointly operated by the United States and the United Kingdom.
Missile Attempt and Interception
Reports indicate that one missile failed mid-flight. A US warship fired an SM-3 interceptor at the second missile.
Officials have not confirmed whether the interception succeeded.
Strike Range Raises Concerns
The attempted strike is significant due to the distance involved. Diego Garcia lies about 4,000 km from Iran, suggesting Tehran’s missile capabilities may extend beyond previously stated limits.
Earlier, Iran had claimed a missile range of around 2,000 km.
Trump Signals Possible Exit
Donald Trump said the US is “very close” to achieving its military objectives against Iran.
He stated that Washington may consider scaling down operations but ruled out a ceasefire.
US Military Build-Up Continues
The Pentagon has deployed additional warships and thousands of Marines to the region.
The move aims to counter growing threats and secure key military and trade routes.
Iran Issues Global Warning
Iran has warned that its response could extend beyond the Middle East. Officials indicated that global locations linked to its adversaries may face risks.
Rising Attacks on Energy Infrastructure
Iran has also intensified attacks on energy facilities. Reports suggest drone strikes targeted Kuwait’s Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery, one of the region’s largest.
Diplomatic Tensions Increase
Iran criticised the United Kingdom for allowing US forces to use its bases for operations. It stated that such actions could put British interests at risk.
Meanwhile, Iran maintained that its actions are in self-defense.
Escalating Conflict in Region
The conflict between Iran, United States, and Israel continues to intensify.
Analysts warn that expanding missile capabilities and global threats could increase the risk of wider conflict.
