Dhabas and small roadside eateries in Dehradun are facing significant challenges due to the recent hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices. The increased operational cost has forced many small business owners to rethink their cooking methods and day-to-day functioning.
Local dhaba owners reported that continuing operations has become difficult, with some switching to traditional methods such as wood-fired cooking to cut costs.
Shift to Alternative Cooking Methods
Dhabas are increasingly relying on alternative fuel sources like wood, coal, and induction cooktops. While these methods help reduce expenses, they also bring challenges in maintaining food quality and timely service.
Owners say that rising costs across all essential items, not just LPG, are adding to their financial burden.
Haridwar Businesses Also Affected
The situation is not limited to Dehradun. In Haridwar, hotel and restaurant operators are also struggling due to supply disruptions and rising costs.
With the pilgrimage season approaching, businesses expected a surge in customers. However, due to the LPG crisis:
- Booking cancellations are increasing
- Staff downsizing has begun
- Some establishments are at risk of shutdown
Government Response and Relief Measures
The government has assured that fuel supplies across the country remain stable despite ongoing global tensions. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG.
As a relief measure, the government has allowed the sale of 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders without requiring address proof. Consumers can now purchase these cylinders using a valid ID card.
This initiative has seen a strong response:
- Over 90,000 cylinders sold in a single day
- Around 6.6 lakh cylinders sold since March 23, 2026
Impact of Global Tensions on Supply
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has indirectly influenced fuel logistics and pricing. However, officials confirmed that India continues to maintain supply chains.
An India-flagged vessel, Green Asha, recently passed through the Strait of Hormuz, marking continued LPG imports into the country.
The LPG price hike has created a challenging environment for small food businesses in Dehradun and nearby regions. While government measures offer some relief, the long-term sustainability of these eateries depends on stable pricing and uninterrupted supply.
