Union Health Minister JP Nadda Launches Drug Registry to Transform India’s Digital Healthcare System

New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Jagat Prakash Nadda on Monday launched the Drug Registry, a landmark digital platform designed to standardise, centralise, and streamline medicine-related information across India’s healthcare ecosystem under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
The Drug Registry aims to become a “single source of truth” for all medicines in India, ensuring uniformity in drug identification, storage, exchange, and usage across hospitals, pharmacies, digital health platforms, and supply chains.
Officials said the Drug Registry will play a critical role in eliminating inconsistencies caused by multiple naming conventions and fragmented data systems that currently exist in the healthcare sector.
A Major Step Toward Digital Health Integration
The newly launched Drug Registry has been developed in collaboration with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and the National Resource Centre for EHR Standards (NRCeS), Pune. Built using globally accepted standards such as SNOMED CT, the Drug Registry ensures semantic interoperability and global compatibility.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Drug Registry is designed to solve long-standing challenges in drug identification and management, which often result in duplication, prescribing errors, and inefficiencies in healthcare delivery.
The platform currently includes more than 1.23 lakh branded medicines, over 10,000 generic drugs, and approximately 29,000 substances, making the one of the most comprehensive medicine databases in the country.
Addressing Gaps in India’s Healthcare Data System
Healthcare experts have long highlighted the lack of a unified drug database as a major barrier to efficient healthcare delivery. The introduction of the Drug Registry is expected to address these gaps by creating a unified structure for all medicine-related data.

The Drug Registry is also designed to integrate seamlessly with Hospital Management Information Systems (HMIS), e-prescription platforms, and doctor-facing applications under ABDM.

The Drug Registry is the fourth core registry under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, following the ABHA Registry for individuals, the Healthcare Professional Registry (HPR), and the Health Facility Registry (HFR).
