The MSME Digital Index 2026 reveals that UPI and Aadhaar banking account for 61% of MSME transactions, while AI adoption among retailers has reached 71%.
New Delhi: India’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are rapidly embracing digital transformation, with UPI and Aadhaar-enabled banking now accounting for 61 per cent of transactions at semi-urban and rural retail stores, according to the MSME Digital Index 2026 released by PayNearby.
The MSME Digital Index 2026 highlights a significant shift in how small businesses operate, showing growing confidence in digital payments, artificial intelligence (AI), and technology-driven business solutions. The report suggests that India’s last-mile retailers are increasingly relying on digital platforms to improve efficiency, attract customers, and increase earnings.
MSME Digital Index 2026 Shows Strong Digital Growth
According to the MSME Digital Index 2026, digital adoption among small businesses has accelerated considerably over the past year.
The survey found that 87 per cent of respondents feel more confident using digital tools compared to last year. Additionally, 82 per cent said they are comfortable using digital platforms for their daily business operations, indicating that digital technology is becoming an integral part of MSME operations.
The MSME Digital Index 2026 also reported that 80 per cent of retailers witnessed increased usage of digital payments at their stores during the past year.
This growing confidence reflects the government’s push for Digital India as well as increasing customer preference for cashless transactions.
UPI and Aadhaar Banking Dominate Transactions
One of the biggest highlights of the MSME Digital Index 2026 is the growing dominance of digital payment systems.
According to the report, UPI and Aadhaar-enabled banking together account for 61 per cent of the dominant transaction mix across surveyed retailers.
Although cash remains the single largest individual payment mode at 37 per cent, digital transactions have become the preferred choice when UPI and Aadhaar banking are combined.
The MSME Digital Index 2026 indicates that customers in rural and semi-urban India are increasingly choosing convenient and secure digital payment methods over traditional cash transactions.
Cash Withdrawal Remains the Most Popular Service
The MSME Digital Index 2026 also examined the services most frequently offered by retailers.
The report found that:
- Cash withdrawal accounted for 51% of services.
- Aadhaar banking contributed 22%.
- UPI services represented 12%.
These findings show that neighbourhood retailers continue to serve as essential banking touchpoints, especially in regions where formal banking infrastructure is limited.
AI Adoption Gains Momentum Among MSMEs
Artificial Intelligence is emerging as another major trend identified in the MSME Digital Index 2026.
The report revealed that 90 per cent of respondents are aware of AI, while 71 per cent have already used AI tools to automate business activities or improve operational efficiency.
Retailers are increasingly using AI for:
- Customer communication
- Inventory management
- Marketing assistance
- Business planning
- Digital documentation
The MSME Digital Index 2026 suggests that AI is gradually becoming accessible even to small retailers operating in semi-urban and rural markets.
Knowledge Gap Still Exists
Despite growing adoption, the MSME Digital Index 2026 also highlighted existing challenges.
Nearly 26 per cent of respondents said they are unsure about which AI features would best support their businesses.
This indicates that while awareness of AI is widespread, many small business owners still require practical training and guidance to maximise the technology’s potential.
Experts believe that targeted digital literacy programmes could significantly accelerate AI adoption across India’s MSME ecosystem.
Digital Tools Improving Business Performance
The MSME Digital Index 2026 found that digital technology is delivering measurable business benefits.
According to the survey:
- 41 per cent of retailers said digital tools helped increase their income.
- 37 per cent reported attracting more customers after adopting digital platforms.
Retailers believe digital payments, online services, and AI-powered tools have enhanced customer convenience while improving operational efficiency.
The MSME Digital Index 2026 suggests that digital transformation is no longer optional but an essential component of business growth.
Retailers Becoming Digital Service Centres
Another important finding of the MSME Digital Index 2026 is the expanding role of neighbourhood retailers.
Many kirana stores, mobile recharge outlets, customer service centres, and local digital service providers are evolving into financial and digital service hubs.
These businesses now offer services including:
- UPI transactions
- Aadhaar-enabled banking
- Cash withdrawals
- Bill payments
- Mobile recharges
- Financial assistance
The report indicates that these retailers are helping bridge the digital divide by bringing banking and financial services closer to customers.
Survey Covered 10,000 MSMEs
The MSME Digital Index 2026 is based on a survey involving 10,000 retailers and MSMEs from across India.
Participants included:
- Kirana stores
- Customer Service Points (CSPs)
- Mobile recharge outlets
- Digital service providers
- Neighbourhood retail businesses
- Digital Naaris within PayNearby’s network
The report assessed several indicators including digital adoption, payment trends, AI readiness, customer engagement, trust barriers, future expectations, and digital training requirements.
Digital India Driving MSME Transformation
The findings of the MSME Digital Index 2026 align with India’s broader Digital India initiative.
The rapid adoption of UPI, Aadhaar-enabled banking, and AI demonstrates that even small retailers in rural and semi-urban markets are embracing technology to remain competitive.
Industry experts believe this transformation will strengthen financial inclusion, improve customer experience, and contribute significantly to India’s digital economy.
With digital infrastructure continuing to expand, MSMEs are expected to play a crucial role in driving inclusive economic growth.
Outlook for MSMEs
The MSME Digital Index 2026 paints an optimistic picture of India’s small business ecosystem.
While challenges such as AI awareness and digital training remain, the report clearly shows that retailers are becoming more confident in using technology to grow their businesses.
As UPI transactions continue to rise and Aadhaar-enabled banking expands across the country, MSMEs are expected to benefit from faster payments, improved financial access, and enhanced operational efficiency.
The MSME Digital Index 2026 also indicates that artificial intelligence will likely become a key growth driver for India’s MSME sector in the coming years, provided adequate training and awareness programmes support its adoption.
Overall, the report highlights a strong digital transformation underway, positioning India’s MSMEs at the forefront of the country’s evolving digital economy
