Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Tuesday rejected allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). He stated that the Prime Minister’s recent address to the nation contained no appeal for votes.
The remarks came in response to concerns raised by P. Sandosh Kumar, a leader from the Communist Party of India. Kumar had written to the chief election commissioner, alleging that the speech breached election guidelines.
BJP Denies Model Code of Conduct Violation
Responding to the allegations, Rao said the prime minister’s speech focused on public issues. According to him, it did not seek electoral support in any form. Therefore, he argued, it cannot be considered a violation of the MCC.
He further claimed that the address exposed what he described as the opposition’s “betrayal” on key issues. In addition, he criticized opposition leaders and termed some supporting voices as “urban naxals”.
Rao also suggested that complaints to the Election Commission were politically motivated. He stated that the strong public response to the Prime Minister’s speech triggered such reactions.
CPI Raises Concerns Over Timing of Speech
Meanwhile, Sandosh Kumar questioned the timing and nature of the address. He pointed out that it was delivered during ongoing elections in several states. These include Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
According to him, the speech carried political messaging. He alleged that it could influence voters during the election period. As a result, he urged the Election Commission to examine the matter.
Furthermore, he claimed that government platforms were used for the broadcast. These included public broadcasters like Doordarshan and Sansad TV.
What the Model Code of Conduct Says
The Model Code of Conduct sets clear rules during elections. It prohibits the misuse of official media for political promotion. In particular, it restricts publicity that could benefit the ruling party.
The guidelines state that government resources should not be used for partisan purposes. This ensures a level playing field for all political parties.
PM Modi’s Remarks on Women’s Issues
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had addressed the nation after the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. During his speech, he said the bill’s rejection was an insult to women.
He emphasized that women voters would remember such issues. He also stated that the opposition would face consequences for their actions.
These remarks have now become part of the ongoing political debate. Both sides continue to present their arguments ahead of the elections.
The controversy over the Prime Minister’s address has added a new dimension to the election narrative. While the BJP denies any violation, the opposition continues to raise concerns.
The Election Commission may review the matter if required. Meanwhile, the political debate around the issue is expected to intensify in the coming days.
