Chennai, April 24, 2026 — Tamil Nadu recorded a strong voter turnout of over 84% in the 2026 Assembly elections, but DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan clarified that the increase does not indicate a major shift in voter participation.
He explained that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls reduced the total number of registered voters, which directly impacted the turnout percentage.
DMK Explains the Real Reason Behind High Turnout
TKS Elangovan directly addressed the numbers and compared them with the previous election.
“In 2021, voters cast around 4.63 crore votes. In 2026, voters cast approximately 4.82 crore votes. The increase is only about 19 lakh votes. So, the difference is not significant,” he said.
He emphasized that analysts must evaluate turnout using actual vote counts, not just percentages.
Leaders Highlight Mathematical Impact of SIR
DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai further explained the situation using simple logic.
“The percentage increased because the total number of voters decreased. When the denominator becomes smaller, the percentage automatically rises,” he stated.
He dismissed claims of an extraordinary surge in voter participation and called the trend “normal.”
Districts Show Strong Participation Across Tamil Nadu
Voters actively participated across districts, showing consistent engagement in both rural and urban regions.
Here are the top-performing districts:
- Karur recorded 89.32% turnout
- Salem reached 88.02%
- Erode reported 87.59%
- Dharmapuri achieved 87.28%
- Tiruppur saw 86.33%
- Ariyalur recorded 83.09%
- Tiruchirappalli reached 82.76%
- Chennai reported 81.34%
- Madurai recorded 77.89%
- Thoothukudi saw 77.56%
These figures clearly show that voters across Tamil Nadu actively participated in the election process.
Election Commission Confirms Smooth Polling
The Election Commission of India conducted polling across all 234 constituencies without major disruptions.
Officials ensured tight security and smooth operations throughout the day. By 5 PM, Tamil Nadu recorded 82.24% turnout, and polling concluded successfully at 6 PM.
Why Percentage Alone Can Mislead
Political leaders stressed that percentage-based analysis can create confusion.
The SIR process removed duplicate and invalid entries from voter lists. As a result, the total voter base decreased, which increased the turnout percentage—even without a massive jump in actual voters.
This explains why leaders like TKS Elangovan called the increase “not much different.”
Election Results to Be Declared on May 4
Authorities will count votes on May 4, 2026, and announce the final results.
Political parties have already intensified their narratives, using voter turnout data to support their positions.
Tamil Nadu witnessed strong voter participation in the 2026 Assembly elections. However, DMK leaders clarified that the increase in turnout percentage resulted from electoral roll revisions, not a dramatic rise in voters.
This election highlights how data interpretation plays a crucial role in shaping political narratives.
