Caracas [Venezuela], January 5: Venezuela’s Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez on Sunday strongly condemned the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro Moros by the United States. He described the move as a “kidnapping” and a direct violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty.
Addressing a press conference, Padrino Lopez said the detention breached Venezuela’s constitutional order. He stated that Maduro was democratically elected for the 2025–2030 term.
“They kidnapped the president chosen by the Venezuelan people. Nicolas Maduro is the constitutional leader of all Venezuelans,” he said.
Armed Forces Reaffirm Support for Maduro
Meanwhile, the Defence Minister said the arrest was an act of injustice. He added that it affected both Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.
According to him, Flores was detained despite her commitment to Christian values. Therefore, he called the incident morally unacceptable.
Moreover, Padrino Lopez reiterated that the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) fully support Maduro. He demanded the immediate release of both leaders.
“We demand the prompt release of our commander-in-chief and the first lady,” he said.
Venezuela Appeals to International Community
Additionally, the Defence Minister urged the international community to observe the situation closely. He said Venezuela’s sovereignty and Constitution were under attack.
Earlier, several countries had condemned what he described as foreign intervention. As a result, he thanked global supporters for standing with Venezuela.
“These actions threaten the global order. Similar acts could happen to other nations,” he warned.
Warning Against Interventionist Policies
Furthermore, Padrino Lopez criticised what he called renewed interventionist policies in Latin America. He rejected the Monroe Doctrine and colonial approaches.
Meanwhile, he appealed for calm within Venezuela. He urged citizens to maintain peace and continue normal economic activities.
“Do not fall into fear or psychological warfare. We must protect our constitutional path,” he said.
