Washington DC, January 12:
Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has reached out to the United States to negotiate, even as tensions between the two nations remain extremely high amid nationwide protests in Iran and threats of possible military escalation.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump stated that Iranian leaders contacted Washington seeking diplomatic engagement. When asked directly if Iran wanted talks, Trump responded, “They do. They called. Iran called to negotiate yesterday. The leaders of Iran called. They want to negotiate.”
Trump further added that Iran is under pressure due to its ongoing confrontation with the US. “I think they’re tired of being beat up by the United States. Iran wants to negotiate,” he said.
Possible US Action Before Talks
While confirming that a meeting is being arranged, Trump warned that the situation inside Iran could force Washington to take action before any negotiations occur.
“We may meet with them. A meeting is being set up, but we may have to act because of what’s happening before the meeting,” Trump said.
Strong Warning on Attacks Against US Bases
When questioned about Iran’s statement that US military and commercial bases would be considered legitimate targets if America launched strikes, Trump issued a sharp warning.
“If they do that, we’ll consider things that they wouldn’t believe. We will hit them at levels that they’ve never been hit before,” he said.
Responding to whether Iran would take the threat seriously, Trump added, “After what they’ve gone through with me—Soleimani, al-Baghdadi, the Iran nuclear threat wiped out—wouldn’t you think so?”
Internet Shutdown and Starlink Discussion
With internet services reportedly shut down across Iran for the past two days, Trump was also asked whether the US would help restore access, possibly through Elon Musk’s Starlink.
“We are going to be talking about that. We may get the internet going. I may speak to Elon Musk,” Trump said, adding that no final decision had been made.
US Senator Signals Possible Military Action
Meanwhile, US Senator Lindsey Graham suggested that military action against Iran could be imminent during a fundraising event.
“This tyrannical regime needs to end. It’s just a matter of time now,” Graham said, calling for the removal of Iran’s leadership.
Iran Protests Turn Violent
These statements come as Iran faces severe unrest following protests that began on December 28, driven by soaring inflation and economic hardship. The demonstrations have escalated into violent clashes between protesters and security forces across the country.
According to the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA):
- At least 544 people have reportedly been killed
- Over 10,681 individuals arrested
- Protests reported in 585 locations across 186 cities
- Unrest has affected all 31 provinces
Authorities have responded with arrests, internet shutdowns, and the use of force as tensions continue to rise.
Conclusion
With Iran reportedly seeking negotiations and US leaders issuing strong warnings, the situation remains highly volatile. Whether diplomacy prevails or military action unfolds will depend on rapidly evolving developments in the region.
