Ranchi, January 16: JSW Soorma Hockey Club registered their first victory in the Hockey India League (HIL) 2026 (Men’s) after defeating HIL Governing Council by 3–1 at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Hockey Stadium on Thursday.
Soorma skipper Harmanpreet Singh starred with a brace, scoring in the 15th and 38th minutes, while Gurjant Singh added another in the 27th minute. For HIL GC, Kane Russell scored the lone goal in the fourth quarter.
Strong Start Sets the Tone
JSW Soorma dominated from the opening quarter. Just 33 seconds before the first hooter, they earned a penalty corner. Harmanpreet Singh stepped up and converted it with a powerful drag-flick to give his side an early lead.
HIL GC attempted a comeback in the second quarter. Their captain Hardik Singh led a few attacking moves. However, Soorma’s defence held firm.
Gurjant Doubles the Lead
In the 27th minute, Gurjant Singh showcased brilliant skill. He entered the circle from the left flank, dribbled past defenders, and fired a trademark shot past goalkeeper James Mazarelo. The goal put Soorma 2–0 ahead and increased pressure on HIL GC.
Soon after, Kane Russell received a green card in the 30th minute, forcing HIL GC to start the third quarter with only ten players.
Harmanpreet Seals the Match
Taking advantage of the numerical edge, JSW Soorma earned another penalty corner in the 38th minute. Harmanpreet converted again to make it 3–0.
Although Kane Russell pulled one back in the 44th minute through a penalty corner, the goal proved too little too late. Soorma controlled possession and saw out the match comfortably.

- HIL GC managed 19 circle entries and 4 shots on target
Despite the defeat, HIL GC remain among the top two teams on the points table.

Player of the Match Gurjant Singh expressed satisfaction after the win.
“We had lost previous games, so this was a must-win match. It was a complete team effort. We want to carry this momentum forward because every match from now on is crucial,” he said.
The win gives JSW Soorma a much-needed boost as they look to climb the standings in Hockey India League 2026.
