New Delhi, March 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday assured that India has made sufficient arrangements to protect farmers and maintain essential supplies amid rising global tensions due to the West Asia conflict.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister stated that the government has ensured adequate availability of fertilisers and coal to support agriculture and electricity production.
Farmers Will Not Bear Global Crisis Burden
PM Modi emphasized that the government has consistently protected farmers from global disruptions.
He said that India currently has sufficient food grain reserves, and preparations are underway to ensure smooth sowing for the upcoming Kharif season. He also highlighted that six urea plants have been commissioned in the last decade, significantly boosting domestic fertiliser production.
Adequate Coal Supply for Rising Electricity Demand
With summer approaching and electricity demand expected to rise, the Prime Minister assured that sufficient coal stocks are available across power plants.
He noted that the government has taken proactive measures to prevent any power shortages during peak demand periods.
Steps Taken to Reduce Fuel Dependency
PM Modi highlighted key initiatives aimed at reducing India’s dependence on fuel imports:
- Ethanol blending has reduced oil imports by approximately 4.5 crore barrels annually
- Railway electrification has saved around 180 crore litres of diesel each year
- Expansion of metro networks has improved energy efficiency
India Diversifies Energy Imports
The Prime Minister stated that India has significantly diversified its energy sources over the past decade.
He noted that energy imports, including crude oil and gas, are now sourced from 41 countries, compared to 27 earlier. This diversification helps ensure uninterrupted supply despite global uncertainties.
Government Monitoring Global Situation
Amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the government remains in constant communication with international partners to safeguard energy supplies and maritime routes.
PM Modi added that several Indian ships stranded in the region have safely returned, reflecting ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The Prime Minister’s assurance comes at a critical time as geopolitical tensions continue to impact global markets. With adequate preparations in place, the government aims to shield farmers, ensure energy security, and maintain economic stability.
