Ahmedabad/New Delhi, April 16, 2026:
Leaders across India welcomed the Women’s Reservation Bill and called it a major step to increase women’s role in politics.
Gujarat Minister Supports the Bill
Gujarat Minister Darshana Vaghela praised the move and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing the Bill.
She said the Bill will help more women join politics and take part in decision-making. “When women enter politics, they do meaningful work,” she said.
She also mentioned B. R. Ambedkar and said he always supported equal rights for women. She added that India gave women voting rights from the very beginning.
Gujarat Model Boosted Women Participation
Vaghela said that when Narendra Modi served as Gujarat Chief Minister, his government gave 50% reservation to women in local bodies.
This step increased the number of women in politics. She said the new Bill will now create more opportunities at the state and national level.
Haryana Minister Calls It a Historic Moment
Haryana Minister Shruti Choudhary also welcomed the Bill and called it a historic moment.
She said people will celebrate this step across regions. “We will organise padyatras and public programmes to mark this change,” she added.
She also praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and said it made this decision possible.
What the Bill Includes
The government plans to introduce this Bill in Parliament with other key proposals. The main points include:
- 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies
- Implementation expected from 2029 elections
- Discussion on delimitation of constituencies
- Proposal to increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850
Opposition Raises Questions
Some opposition leaders questioned the plan for delimitation and the increase in Lok Sabha seats.
They said the government should clearly explain the basis of these changes.
