New Delhi, April 21, 2026: In a major step towards strengthening bilateral economic relations, the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The agreement aims to enhance trade, investment, and joint venture opportunities between India and Trinidad and Tobago.
Speaking to ANI, Trinidad and Tobago’s High Commissioner to India, Chandradath Singh, highlighted that the MoU will focus on identifying strategic business opportunities and fostering collaboration between companies from both nations.
Focus on Trade, Investment, and Joint Ventures
According to Singh, the agreement will primarily target manufacturing and trading sectors, enabling both countries to deepen economic ties. He emphasized that the partnership will not only encourage imports of finished goods from India but will also promote exports from Trinidad and Tobago to India.
“This collaboration is about finding the right business opportunities and strengthening trade relations between the two countries,” Singh stated.
Strengthening India–Trinidad Relations
Singh also pointed out that the visit of the TTMA delegation comes at a highly favorable time, given the expanding economic opportunities in India. He referenced the recent visit of Narendra Modi to Trinidad and Tobago, which played a crucial role in boosting bilateral cooperation.
During the visit, India pledged support in key sectors such as:
- Pharmaceuticals
- Biotechnology
- Agriculture
- Industrial development
These developments are expected to further strengthen economic collaboration between India and Caribbean nations.
Trade Growth and Export Opportunities
While acknowledging that current trade volumes between the two countries remain modest, Singh expressed optimism about future growth.
He stated that achieving a 10–15% increase in bilateral trade would be a significant milestone, particularly for exports from Trinidad and Tobago to India.
Trinidad and Tobago is also exploring opportunities to introduce niche products into the Indian market, aiming to reduce the long-standing trade imbalance.
Rising Demand from Gen Z Market
Highlighting changing consumer behavior, Singh noted that India’s large Gen Z population presents a massive opportunity for innovative products.
“Young consumers are looking for new tastes in fashion, music, food, and lifestyle. This is the right time for Trinidad and Tobago to enter the Indian market,” he said.
Current Trade Scenario
At present, India exports a wide range of products to Trinidad and Tobago, including:
- Food items and condiments
- Fashion and jewellery
- Religious and puja materials
- Pulses and grains
- Medicines
However, efforts are now being made to increase exports from Trinidad and Tobago to India.
Future Outlook: Trade Boom Expected
Emil Kishan Ramkisson, President of TTMA, expressed confidence that the growing cooperation between the two nations could lead to a significant boom in trade and commerce over the next five years.
Meanwhile, TTMA CEO Mahendra Ramdeen emphasized the importance of business diversification, especially amid global trade disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions, including issues around the Strait of Hormuz.
